I try to be a “cup half full” kind of person and, most of the time, people surpass my expectations…but today, human kindness and empathy was ignored, when it could have been so easy to help!
Lauren and I went for a midday walk on the Brentwood walking path, behind the old Maryland Farms YMCA and, about a mile into the walk, she needed to go to the restroom. Now…Under normal circumstances, this wouldn’t be a concern, but when you are almost 7 months pregnant, it’s kind of a DEAL!!
Almost a half mile from the car, I rang the exterior bell on building housing the Tennessee Hospital Association and told the voice on the other end of the intercom our dilemma. Instead of ringing us in, she said “I’ll be right down!”
Five minutes later, after standing in 90 degree sun, she opened the door a crack and said “Sorry, we don’t have any public bathrooms, but there’s a McDonalds about a mile down the road.”
I’m not sure which disappointed me more:
1. She either had never been pregnant and, as such, had no empathy for the urgency of a pregnant momma or
2. That is was the Tennessee Hospital Association that turned us away when we needed help or
3. That she made us stand in the HEAT for five minutes instead of just telling us, on the intercom, that she COULD NOT ACCOMMODATE OUR REQUEST or
4. That it was MY IDEA to stop and we just happened to pick the ONE BUILDING in all of Brentwood that had NO HUMAN EMPATHY and their whole existence is literally about the care and wellbeing of Tennesseans! ?
SHEESH!
